The aim of this module is to focus on specific contemporary topics that impact on the employment relations landscape nationally and globally. We consider the wider political, economic and social contexts that impact on employment relations. We are concerned with the ways in which work, workplaces and workers are being impacted and influenced by changes in technology, economic, political and social systems. The module demonstrates that to be an effective ER/IR/HR practitioner one has to understand the broader context of employment relations rather than narrowly focusing on labour legislation only.

The module is reading intensive and there is no prescribed textbook. Instead we will upload readings onto Learn2025.  Learn2025 is the primary method of communication and dissemination of reading and module material. The readings are compulsory and you will have source your own material for some themes and for your assignment.  All readings can be accessed for free from the UKZN databases and the internet and will be placed on Learn where possible.

Seminars consist of student presentations, facilitator input and class discussion. Seminars are only productive if the assigned reading is done beforehand.  The mode of delivery is online (Zoom) with material placed on Learn.  Given the reality of power blackouts, it may not always be possible to attend every seminar. Whilst as facilitators we will do our best to make sure we are always online when scheduled, we too are impacted by blackouts, and may have to postpone seminars.  Consequently, we have placed as much learning material as possible on the Learn site. However, we are not in a position to re lecture to students if you are unable to attend. As far as possible recorded seminars will be placed online to mitigate against power blackouts.

You are welcome to form your own student Whatsapp group, but there will be no Whatsapp groups that include facilitators for this module. Learn and email are sufficient to communicate with us. Of course, we are happy to call you if those modes of communication have not resolved your queries. I will also be physically on campus should you wish to see me (Prof Ruggunan) but this will need to be arranged in advance. We will elect a class representative who can also table any issues with us so that will also be a form of communication between the class and facilitators.
