This course introduces students to Zimbabwean mbira music, focusing on two primary types: the Nhare mbira, also known as Mbira DzaVadzimu, and the Nyunga Nyunga mbira. Students will explore the history and physical structure of both instruments while learning two songs for each type. For the Nhare mbira, the class will study Gandanga and Jari Mukaranga, while for the Nyunga Nyunga mbira, they will learn Chikende and Chigwaya. In addition to practical instruction, students will gain an understanding of the cultural and historical contexts in which these songs were traditionally performed, along with their literal translations.
