Welcome to Classical Civilisation 1A 2025: Ancient Greek Words and Ideas

This course will introduce you to the academic discipline of Classics and the history of Classics in South Africa. It will guide you through the rise of several civilisations in the Ancient Mediterranean, from pre-historic times to the earliest cultures of Greece, then examine the growing power and influence of Greek-speaking peoples in the Mediterranean, and the development of Greek literature, religion, philosophy and political theory over nearly 1000 years.

Please make sure to download the handbook for CCCV101 available below. It includes a detailed course summary, a timetable for the semester, important information on assessment, useful maps and timelines, and a glossary of terms you may come across in your studies.

Tutorial assignments may be found in the booklets provided under each topic.
