This module aims to introduce the application of reading and understanding the play theatrical text as a means of unpacking and engaging varied cultural concepts and expressions.
The aim will be twofold: First, the lectures will provide context for the study of Drama and Performance within the realm of culture and as part of the framework of arts and culture. We will look at the definition/s of culture in its broadest sense and locate Drama and Performance within it.
Secondly, once we have established where Drama and Performance sit as part of Cultural expression, we will go into some detail about the Definitions and debates. We will go through some of the terminologies that you will encounter in your studies. We will also look briefly at different understandings of theatre as well as differing origins. You will also be introduced to some critical theoretical concepts, which will help to frame your understanding of the role of theatre and performance locally and globally.
